Kate set up the business and is passionate about design.
She trained in graphic design and illustration in Exeter and York and has worked for a large architectural practice as a graphic designer, York College as a senior designer, studio manager, and graphic design tutor, and at kma interactive media, designing websites for Channel 4 and Arts and Business, and interactive graphics for live stage shows for Phoenix Dance, The Brits as well as challenging contemporary interactive work for artists such as Tom Phillips. During this time, she also freelanced in design for print and in illustration.
With over 18 years of valuable and varied experience behind her, she set up Bivouac full time in 2004 and was shortlisted for The Press Women in Enterprise Award the same year. Since then, the business has grown in turnover, clients and reputation year on year, and is currently based in a lovely bright Georgian studio in Castlegate, central York.
Kate’s personal projects include an illustrated childrens’ book about a wayward dog, painting, sketching and collecting new colour palettes observed from natural objects - one of her latest design projects uses a palette inspired by a the (rather wet!) landscape of Northumberland.
She was awarded membership of the Chartered Society of Designers in 2004. The CSD is a professional body that upholds standards of design and professional practice within the industry (the MCSD suffix is nothing to do with Microsoft!). Visit www.csd.org.uk to find out what this means to you.
